'password' => 'nullable|min:8|confirmed'; 反正在 5.2 当中是 不需要nullable的, 但如果在5.5中 若没有 nullable ,
(提交时假如为空时)就是会执行 min:8 的验证,就会报错.
默认情况下，Laravel自带了 TrimStrings 和 ConvertEmptyStringsToNull 中间件，这两个中间件位于 App\Http\Kernel 类的全局中间件堆栈中，因为这个原因，你需要经常将“可选”的请求字段标记为 nullable —— 如果你不想让验证器将 null 判定为无效的话。例如：
在这个例子中，我们指定 publish_at 字段可以为 null 或者有效的日期格式。如果 nullable 没有被添加到验证规则，验证器会将 null 判定为无效日期。

不要在验证器上通过“必需”
验证如下

sometimes or required. They're mutually exclusive. If you just use sometimes, it will be validated if it's not empty. – Marco Aurélio Deleu Feb 18 '17 at 18:58

Perhaps you were looking for 'nullable'?
'test'=> 'nullable|min:6'I think you are looking for filled. https://laravel.com/docs/5.4/validation#rule-filled
Do not pass 'required' on validator
Validate like below
$this->validate($request, [
'username' => 'required|unique:login',
'password' => 'between:8,20'
]);The above validator will accept password only if they are present but should be between 8 and 20
This is what I did in my use case
case 'update':
$rules = [

break;Here the tracker may or may not have sim card number , if present it will be 8 to 15 characters wrong

if you still want to pass hardcoded 'NULL' value then add the following in validator
$str='NULL';
$rules = [
password => 'required|not_in:'.$str,
];Though the question is a bit old, this is how you should do it. You dont need to struggle so hard, with so much code, on something this simple.
You need to have both nullable and sometimes on the validation rule, like:
$this->validate($request, [
'username' => 'required|unique:login',
'password' => 'sometimes|nullable|between:8,20'
]);The above will validate only if the field has some value, and ignore if there is none, or if it passes null. This works well.

If you are sending null on purpose then make an if condition for validation:
